Kerry Lucas

Firstly I would like to acknowledge The Traditional Land Owners of country throughout Victoria, their ongoing connection to this land and water, and I pay respect to their culture and their Elders – past, present and emerging.Hello. My name is Kerry and the creative behind le petit moineau. In 2010 our third child, Emily, was stillborn at 36 weeks. This life changing event was to reshape our family and my journey, not only as a mother but also as a learner and educator. I resigned by teaching position and decided to begin a new path.I turned to my love of paper and stationery. I started creating cards and began a small business, le petit moineau, to honour our little sparrow we had lost. I found some solace in my grief. It became my hope. My healing place. My safe place. In 2013 I attended my first Calligraphy workshop and I knew in that instant when I dipped the nib into the ink and I drew my first letter that this was a new found passion. The spark was lit. Since then through this amazing community I have had the privilege of teaching this beautiful skill to inspire others on their own creative journey. A highlight for me was teaching children calligraphy. The way in which the children embraced the materials and guidance was truly heart warming. For me Calligraphy is a form of communication, an interpretation of your own handwriting, which is unique to all of us. It’s a part of who you are now and in the future. It was in my teaching that I also wanted to explore my journey as a life learner. Last year I enrolled at the V&A in London and have begun online courses in Art History. This truly has been a lifeline during the last year and a half. To immerse myself in such a visually rich and academic world has expanded my knowledge and thought around my own creativeness as my interpretation of calligraphy grows. What I have learned these past few years is that le petit moineau is a celebration of our family and my journey in everyday life as well as my creative one.
