In this two hour workshop participants are guided through the basic principles of calligraphy and use these simple techniques to to write a weathergram. Written on a strips of brown paper with traditional sumi ink, this style of writing can be poems, quotes or words of gratitude. It can be a simple word or phrase.
A weathergram is an idea based on an original Japanese tradition that was interpreted by Lloyd Reynolds, the founder of The Portland Society for Calligraphy, of attaching a strip of paper that was written with a prayer and then hung from branches of trees. They were then left in the elements to watch them ‘weather’. Weathergrams were traditionally written around the time of the Solstice or Equinox of seasons.
All materials are provided, which include: guided tuition, a personal calligraphy kit, and a handmade porcelain pen rest. There is a maximum of fourteen people per workshop.
