A conversation panel discussing the history, nuances, concepts and realities of Blak Design today. Referencing both the 2018 exhibition Blak Design Matters and the more recent Blak Jewellery exhibition, Tom Mosby leads a discussion with significant First Nations designers, creatives and industry experts. It will interrogate how Indigenous design is defined, received, and made visible in Australia’s contemporary design landscape. Exploring the question, what is meaningful Indigenous design and why does it matter?

Tom Mosby (Torres Strait Islander) is Chief Executive Officer of the Koorie Heritage Trust, Melbourne. Beginning his career as an art conservator with the Art Gallery of Western Australia and later with the National Gallery of Victoria, in 1998 Tom curated the highly- acclaimed Ilan Pasin (this is our way), Australia’s first major survey of Torres Strait Islander art. Practising as a lawyer for 10 years, including Senior Associate roles in Melbourne and Brisbane, Tom returned to the cultural sector in 2009 as Executive Manager, Indigenous Research and Projects, with the State Library of Queensland. Tom is currently chair of the Board of Directors of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair.
Myles Russell-Cook is the Curator of Indigenous Art at the National Gallery of Victoria. Myles’ passion is for First Nations contemporary art, and much of his influence and inspiration comes from his own maternal Aboriginal heritage.
Jefa Greenaway is currently Knowledge Broker | Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne with over two decades experience at the University. Jefa is also a regular design communicator, across podcasts, articles and as regular design commentator on ABC Radio. Jefa is also director of Greenaway Architects (est. 1998) a holistic design practice undertaking architectural, landscape, interior and urban design projects for private, commercial and educational clients. Professor Brian Martin is the faculty’s inaugural Associate Dean, Indigenous. Brian is a descendant of Muruwari, Bundjalung and Kamilaroi peoples. Brian is represented by William Mora Galleries. He has been a practising artist for twenty-seven years and has exhibited both nationally and internationally specifically in the media of painting and drawing. His research and practice focuses on refiguring Australian art and culture from an Indigenous ideological perspective based on a reciprocal relationship to “Country”. Brian was previously Professor and Head of Research at the Institute of Koorie Education at Deakin University. He is also Honorary Professor of Eminence at Centurion University of Technology and Management in Odisha, India.
