Assistance Animals Welcome Wheelchair AccessBorderers raid across, make home in and of the borderlands. The Borderers sees Tennant Creek Brio, an artist collective hailing from their namesake town, take possession of Modern Times for Melbourne Design Week. Their energetic painting, mark-making and interventions erupt across colonial debris such as television screens, pokie machines and discarded mining maps. Against this back-drop of sculpture and paintings is an improvised dwelling, a windbreak constructed of burnt corrugated iron, a once-common sight in the Tennant Creek area, where a chronic housing shortage has endured for decades. Vintage and contemporary furniture and design pieces cohabit the space uneasily, manifesting a powerful tension between the preoccupations of dominant culture, and the Brio’s fierce truth-telling.
