Redesigning Waste: Pocket Politics Edition Past Event

Presented by Future Archive

The concept of contemporary gendered pocket disparity is one that many women are familiar with, collectively acknowledge and roll their eyes at, but why is it accepted? Is to be denied functional pockets to be denied of autonomy in a consumeristic motive to push sales of extra accessories that many would often prefer to go without?

In this workshop, all genders will come together with examples of our most and least used and loved pocket from our wardrobes and discuss why they are or aren’t successful. Participants are invited to bring two garments to show and discuss. Garments from the Future Archive will also be available for use in this activity.

Participants will learn hand stitching techniques to create a pocket intervention. They can decide whether to cut and/or attach material to a garment, create a pocket that can be attached by hijacking existing garment features, or as a prototype example for the intervention to be made on the garment. Reclaimed discarded materials, garments for intervention, thread, sewing needles and other tools for conventional and unconventional joining and attaching will be provided by Future Archive.

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants will have a realised pocket intervention and the skills to undertake further wardrobe interventions as they please. Food and refreshments will be provided that align with Future Archive’s values exploring notions of rethinking waste and exploring alternatives to consumerism.

Future Archive

Future Archive is the ongoing research based design project of RMIT BA Fashion (Design) (Honours) student Melanie Read in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga). Future Archive understands and critiques contemporary consumer culture through the act of archiving discarded material items and exploring systems of reassigning value and sentimentality to items otherwise deemed as waste.
