Mygration & Phenomenon Past Event

Presented by Laura Deakin

This exhibition at The Brunswick Street Gallery by contemporary jewellers Laura Deakin and Katherine Hubble showcases an innovative approach to adornment. With a deep understanding of their craft, these two artist bring together an exhibit that will ignite both the senses and the mind.

Laura Deakin’s contribution to the exhibition investigates home – both a familiar and foreign place – through exploring notions behind human migration and the connections we all have to it. Mygration, Yourgration, Ourgration asks questions about what it’s like to be a lost in a foreign landscape. This exhibition follows her recent exhibition in this series, which opened in Munich at Gallery Wittenbrink in early 2020.

Katherine Hubble’s contribution Twenty-first Century Pearls investigates pearl jewellery through the lens of industry methods used in cultivating Australia South Sea pearls and the Pinctada Maxima (pearl shell) through the context of a studiobased contemporary jewellery practice. This exhibition explores the notion of what Australian pearl jewellery could be in the twenty-first century. Mass production processes of vacuum forming and 3D printing are used to reimagine one of the most traditional craft motifs of the shell, and historical jewellery archetype of the beaded necklace. Contemporary plastic materials are used to challenge the notion of value within jewellery materials and what is considered precious.

The exhibition will run from 10-27 March, and includes two floor talks by both artists.
