Melbourne Design Week (MDW) holds an annual commission that invites writers, researchers and designers to tell a story through a one-off commission that expands an underlying MDW theme.

Each ‘design broadcaster’ produces one piece of content – such as an essay, podcast or video. In return, Broadcasters receive a commissioning fee of $1,200 (the equivalent to a 1,200 word article). In the process, Broadcasters will be offered one-to-one mentoring and access to the Design Week program. The 2022 Design Broadcasters are: Bianca Arthur-Hull, Madeleine Collie and Jade Irvine. In 2021, the Broadcasters were Paul van Herk, Samuel Torre and Amy Snoekstra.
