DRIFT: A DEEP SEA FASHION DESIGN AND FILM EXPERIENCE Past Event

Presented by Poppy Somers

DRIFT invites visitors to experience a deep sea exploration of the Ningaloo Canyons interpreted through fashion, design and film. By emulating a place that is hostile to humans yet abundant with life, DRIFT furthers the connection and consideration of humans towards the natural world in order to change everyday actions that impact on the planet. DRIFT pushes the limits of conventional mediums of fashion through the use of sustainable materials, such as bioplastics and up-cycled garments.

Poppy Somers

Poppy Somers is an environmental activist and realist visionary who practices within the medium of fashion design to communicate ideas and reflections regarding human-environment interactions. Originally from Perth on Whadjuk Country, but now living in Melbourne (Naarm/Birrarung-ga), Somers’ deep connection to the environment stems from engaging in planting trees and clearing rubbish from the age of nine. Poppy Somers creates garments inspired by global environmental issues to gain attention from the public towards the important theme behind each project. They assist the viewer in developing reflexivity into their own life toward their individual relationship with the planet and the environment around them. Using sustainable materials such as bioplastics, up-cycled and found materials, Somers designs thoughtful collections that minimise their impact on the environment in order to highlight the urgency and need for societal change.
